Anything for Selena

Google honors the late Selena Quintanilla with a Doodle and a special feature in the Google Arts and Culture Exhibit. Today marks the 28th anniversary of the release of her first solo album, Selena. The Google Doodle animation follows her life with one of her most popular songs, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” playing in the background.

Although, it’s been 22 years since she’s passed, her legacy continues on with a fan base ranging from the OG fans to younger generations who may have not even been born yet when she rose to fame. One of her most important contributions to the music industry and more specifically, in America, was her shattering barriers as a Mexican-American musician, with her first studio album Selena charting No.1 on Billboard 200.

Quintanilla’s presence in the spotlight has shed light to the generations growing up with her by being an extremely relatable role model. Some folks can agree that they have faced challenges with identifying their cultural role as a Chicano often battling assimilating to the dominant culture over their Hispanic heritage. Quintanilla filled the gap in a predominantly white community by staying true to her Hispanic roots, while still gaining fans all over the world with her talent, memorable songs, cheery spirit, and fashion sense. Quintanilla’s life was cut way too short, but her legacy, spirit, and music remains with us forever.
