Miley Cyrus’ “Midnight Sky” – Review

Miley Cyrus is back again, and we’re hoping it’s for longer than last time. “Midnight Sky” is her first release of 2020, following up the SHE IS COMING EP, which was supposed to be part of a 3-EP set. However, nothing else was ever released, leaving fans wondering what Cyrus was doing.

“Midnight Sky” features the 80’s synths and disco beats that have become a mainstay of pop music these days, with lyrics that describe her free spirit. “I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone, oh no // I don’t need to be loved by you,” she sings over the sparkling production.

The song was accompanied by a music video, directed by Cyrus herself, that shows the singer performing under disco balls and neon lights. In a statement about the song, Cyrus mentions Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry as influences.

There’s no word yet on whether this song is part of a larger project, but we can already cross “album” off that list. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Cyrus said she has no plans for a new album:

“It doesn’t make sense for me to try to wrap up that big of a body of time in just a few songs and even in a record, I really have always enjoyed dropping singles, rather than the full body of work.”

Fans are disappointed, but not necessarily surprised. Cyrus’ release schedule has always been disorganized and somewhat erratic, so at this point, we’ll take what we can get.
