Need to Know – Hook

The gender gap in hip-hop has shrunk greatly in recent years.  Though we are still in a place where we demand excellence from female rappers and praise mediocrity from male rappers, we are past the days where only one female rapper can be at the top of the game.  Artists like Megan Thee Stallion, City Girls, Rico Nasty, Cardi B, Rapsody, and Tierra Whack have burst onto the scene with hard hitting bars, glamorous aesthetics, and incomparable confidence.  So who’s next up to continue this reign of female dominance?  Look no further than Riverside, California’s own, Hook.

With her unconventional flow and biting lyricism, Hook brings an unmatched, unapologetic energy to her tracks.  She’s released projects prolifically in the last two years, each expanding her authentic, Souncloud-era take on classic West Coast hip-hop and G-Funk.  Her latest release “NVR” packs a punch, with a corresponding music video featuring a costumed Hook in various mid-20th century era aesthetics.

Though she got her start performing in various R&B girl groups, her “whisper-scream” flow, razor-sharp bars, and fiery bravado have quickly turned heads in hip-hop.  She’s already collaborated with notable viral rappers including 645AR and Zack Fox.

Hook’s videos never disappoint to deliver dope style, woozy cinematography, and pinpointed edits similar to AWGE DVDs.  Despite playing with so many different elements in her songs and visuals, Hook always remains in complete control.  Her brash style of “ramble rap” and constantly changing flows makes Hook one of the most exciting up and coming rappers.
