Musical Theater that Breaks Boundaries
With the return of Broadway inching closer and closer as COVID-19 cases plummet and vulnerable populations become vaccinated, it’s more important now than ever to support theaters and keep them alive. However, not everyone can get into the classic genre of musical theater. Here are three musicals (that are not Hamilton) breaking boundaries that supersede boundaries and appeal to a wide range of audiences.
Six: The Musical
For the fans of history and female pop icons, Six tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII. From the clever and promiscuous Anne Boleyn to the loving Jane Seymour, each woman of Six is inspired by a different female pop icon cemented in infamy. From R&B beats inspired by the music of Beyoncé, to rock ballads that would make Avril proud, Six is a celebration of history and the women who made it.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical
Based on the hit 2001 movie musical starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge tells the story of a French courtesan and her forbidden love with an American playwright. Moulin Rouge! is unique in that it is a jukebox musical, taking popular songs from popular artists, and mixing them to make them its own. And who could forget “Lady Marmalade?” If you’re looking for complete and utter fun from start to finish, Moulin Rouge! is perfect for you.
Jagged Little Pill
The Grammy award-winning musical Jagged Little Pill tells the story of a suburban family confronting modern issues, set to the soundtrack of Alanis Morrisette’s iconic masterpiece. If you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia and comfort, Jagged Little Pill encapsulates 21st century America and all of the challenges that come with it.
