Cautious Clay, Remi Wolf, Still Woozy and More Team Up For Charity Single “Cheesin'”
Even though the world is more or less shut down at the moment, artists are still finding ways to collaborate with their friends and peers. Cautious Clay’s new single “Cheesin’” is proof of that; the track features vocals from Remi Wolf, Still Woozy, Sophie Meiers and Claud, guitar from Melanie Faye and production by Clay and HXNS.
The track’s production is sharp and cheerful, giving off breezy, summer vibes. However, the lyrics are not as carefree. The song kicks off with Clay singing, “I’ve been knowing that we can’t last // made it all up just to stay with you // Now I’m cheesin’ when you blow past // if you take a slice of me, that’s all alright with me.” The featured artists each have their own verse about this struggling relationship, with Clay taking the lead on the choruses.
“I wanted [“Cheesin'”] to be a thing that I could use to bring everyone together while things were a little bit crazy,” Clay said of the track in an interview with Nylon. “Might as well do something that was positive for people and have a great time… I’m just trying to empower people to be creative and then also just support those who really need it in the time who don’t have other ways to do that.”
Creating a song remotely isn’t uncommon, which makes working during a pandemic easier for some artists. “I usually work pretty remotely myself, so because I had a lot of different people working on this, it felt kind of… a bit more just passing things back and forth. Like, ‘Yo, you’re gonna work on this? Yeah. Here’s a song, here’s an idea,’” said Clay. “They send it back and so on or so forth. I think because of that mentality, it sort of sparks things up in a really interesting way.”
“Cheesin’” is a perfect example of how artists are continuing to create and release music together, even while we all have to physically stay apart. It’s also an example of how artists can help out right now – all proceeds from the track will be donated to the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund.
