“deja vu” – Single Review
Well, Olivia Rodrigo has done it again. Her new single, “deja vu,” is another smash that we’ll be singing all summer.
The song continues the story she started earlier this year with “drivers license.” Instead of mourning a lost love, though, this single sees Rodrigo calling out her ex for repeating their relationship with someone new.
“So when you gonna tell her that we did that too? // She thinks it’s special but it’s all reused,” Rodrigo sings, before launching into the catchy chorus: “Do you get deja vu when she’s with you?”
The song is full of personal details that give the story dimension. She mentions watching Glee, eating strawberry ice cream and listening to Billy Joel; all things her ex is now sharing with another girl.
“I had this single picked out in September ,” Rodrigo shared in an interview with heat Radio. “So it sort of took the pressure off for me of following up “drivers license” since we planned this so far in advance. But it’s definitely not like “drivers license” at all, which I’m really happy about. I didn’t want to pigeonhole myself into this category of ‘sad ballad girl’ thing. It’s definitely a little different, and sort of weird. I really hope that people like it, and even if they don’t, that’s cool too though, because I loved making it.”
With “deja vu,” Rodrigo is proving that the success of “drivers license” was no fluke and that she’s a star with staying power.
Her debut album will be out May 21. The title has not been revealed yet.
