Why We Should All Be Listening to “Whatta Man” Right Now

The weather is getting warmer, people are showing off their vax cards like it’s the newest iPhone, and summer is so close you can taste it, which means it’s time to start making those perfect summer playlists.

My number one pick for summer ‘21? “Whatta Man” by Salt-N-Pepa, featuring En Vogue

With an instantly recognizable hook and an old school horn section, this song is what you want playing while you’re in the car with the windows down on the way to the beach.

In addition to its sunny production and easy-to-sing chorus, the song features lyrics that are by turn funny and sincere that describe the singers’ perfect men.

“A lot of snot-nosed ex-flames couldn’t be him,” Pepa raps, “He never ran a corny line once to me yet // so I give him stuff that he’ll never forget.”

Salt takes a more earnest view: “I know that ain’t nobody perfect // I give props to those who deserve it // and believe me y’all, he’s worth it // So here’s to the future ‘cause we got through the past // I finally found somebody that can make me laugh.”

The song is anchored by the infectious hook, sung by En Vogue: “Whatta man, whatta man, whatta man, what a mighty good man.”

Originally released on the group’s 1993 album Very Necessary, the song has recently been enjoying another surge in popularity. Like most things, it can be traced back to a TikTok trend. Users record themselves singing along to the line “You so crazy // I think I wanna have your baby,” while adding pictures or videos of their crush – celebrity or real life.

The track was also featured in this year’s Coming 2 America, the sequel to 1988 comedy Coming to America. In the movie, the song was reworked as “What a King.”

The song has a fun and carefree energy that we could all use a little more of after this year. Whether you’re singing the chorus with your friends on a night out or dancing around to the song in your kitchen, just hearing that opening hook is an instant mood-lifter.

Add “Whatta Man” to your summer playlist; you won’t regret it.
